When driving to this location you have to go through about 5 miles of very tough road.

That not working out, we continued on the trail, which takes you back down to the old road. To beat the crowds, it’s best to complete this hike as early as possible. Though the Crags cataracts may lack volume they are still exquisite examples of plunging water. With a diameter of 300 feet, this hot spring is so large and steamy, you can’t see much of it from the surrounding boardwalks.

Kayaking the Genesee River to Lower Falls! As you walk the dirt road, you see pass a creek and cross rolling hills. It’s not a nice as from the overlook, but it’s still pretty cool.
I had a chance to check out the new Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook on our cross-country adventure last summer, so I did. Still, outside of the Castle Crags there is only one other named waterfall in the Trinity Divide.
Make sure you bring a swimming suit because at the end there are plenty of places to swim! Some of these, though not true waterfalls, are striking in their own right. Overall a great walk for the entire family just make sure to bring plenty of water and very comfortable shoes. (merge left onto wide dirt road).

In fact, the trail was so crowded that I felt like I was swimming more than hiking. The Fairy Falls Trail is approximately five miles round trip and begins in the Spenceville Wildlife and Recreation Area, off of Spenceville Road. I was scouting the trail because the following day I was going to bring my entire family including my mother-in-law. After almost 22 miles (you will pass by Old Faithful before this), turn left, following the sign for Fairy Falls. About three-fourths of the way down the fall, the water crashes into a rocky bench and breaks apart into numerous cascades. Though none of the waterfalls in the Trinity Divide are as well-known as their cousins along the Sacramento and McCloud Rivers, they are still gorgeous cataracts. 5.25 miles out & back to Fairy Falls including the overlook. Length 1.3 mi Elevation gain 255 ft Route type Out & Back.
Rather than cascading down the cliff, Burstarse Falls is a complete free fall. To get a good view of the falls requires a small amount of very minor rock scrambling.
Please note: there aren't many shady areas along this trail. By the time we got back to the parking area, it was jammed packed! I will definitely do this hike again. Either way, the trail leads to the same sign: The sign marks the three trail options to get to the Falls; Upper, Middle and Lower Falls Trails.

Still, even if the falls of the Trinity Divide are focused in the Castle Crags, they remain some of the most spectacular waterfalls in Northern California and deserve far more attention than they receive. A year or two ago, I read on the Yellowstone National Park Facebook page that the park had just created a new trail – one that looked down on the Grand Prismatic Spring. This place looks absolutely perfect. A little higher up the canyon this band of cliffs is now a popular rock climbing spot. before reaching the trailhead. The viewing area is large enough, but at that hour of the morning, it was rightly almost empty. You won’t be able to resist exploring this unique area.
To complete this loop route, get on the wide dirt road heading east (slight left as you leave the creek bank)
Plenty of parking but the actual road there was unbelievably bumpy. Views from the old road toward the Grand Prismatic Spring – looks apocalyptic to me!
2. Veer Left onto Trail when Road Makes Right Turn. For those looking for a bit more adventure, it is possible to scramble up to the waterfall and enjoy gorgeous sapphire pools that lie at the base of some of the tiers, again bringing to mind some of the spots in California’s most famous national park. The Fairy Falls trail is a mostly flat, easy walk through classic Lodgepole pine forest to a spectacular 200-foot waterfall. I took the Lower Falls Trail option which took me along the river. I recommend starting early and hiking during the less busy months of the year (fall-winter). This place is as jaw-dropping as it sounds! The sign marks the three trail options to get to the Falls; Upper, Middle and Lower Falls Trails. I’d suggest going a few hours earlier if you bring a dog because the ground got hot.
The Trinity Divide, the large mountain range directly to the west of Mount Shasta is a treasure trove for outdoor enthusiasts. It is perhaps the most classically formed waterfall in the region.

Formed when Burstarse Creek hurtles itself off of a tall granite cliff with great momentum. There is a small parking area to the right and a larger one to the left; however, trailers, busses, and RVs are prohibited due to space constraints. Somewhat scenic trail, more of a dirt road for most of it. The tight confines of the amphitheater make viewing Burstarse Falls a more secluded, intimate experience. This is really just a walk along an unpaved road with maybe 1/8 of the trail providing you the option to do some single track. You can either walk around the other side of the hill and to the top of the falls, or walk the steep trail next to the protective fence. You'll receive your first newsletter soon!
Trail Notes: This is a better summer hike if you actually want to see down on the pool – the cool air will create a cloud of water vapor over the spring and block the view.
