Good Omens, the recent television adaptation of the Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett novel, is the most optimistic apocalypse story imaginable, a Romeo and Juliet story without the tragedy. They are more like the humans they’ve lived amongst and come to care for, and the two are neither inherently evil nor good. Occult/Ethereal beings don’t have sexes, something we tried to reflect in the casting. Two wonderful actors, playing characters who feel trapped by their respective labels, who long to spend some quality time together, away from the judgmental eyes of their angelic/demonic peers.

The masterwork collaboration between Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett has many great characters. Good Omens' eternity-spanning story is told out of order - and it gets quite confusing.

And now seems as good a time as any to pick up where I left off and yell at you about how much I fuckin’ love Gay Good Omens. It’s long been a pastime of fans to reimagine bromantic protagonists as passionate lovers, and Good Omens is so openly homoerotic that the fan fiction doesn’t need to push boundaries - it’s out there in the open, just never spoken aloud. Good Omens is, amongst many other things, a gorgeous, sweeping love story, and for that alone, my cheesy ass must recommend it to you.

Crowley, seductive snake from the garden of Eden, is an oddly amicable demon, while Aziraphale’s most angelic quality is naivety. An adaptation first entered development in 2011, but didn't gain traction until 2017 when Amazon gave it the go-ahead. Salvation springs from characters rebelling against divine authority, pushing back against their roles, forging their own paths despite the tyrannical demands of destiny.

It’s a fight I’m familiar with, and I don’t begrudge them for wanting explicit labels for characters. This reliance on dialogue, and at times narration, leaves more to be desired for the visual storytelling.

Which have been adapted for the screen and which deserve the same treatment?

Call them whatever, because whatever they are, they’re in love and that’s canon. Sheen’s Aziraphale makes for a warmhearted but indulgent angel, whose chemistry with Tennant’s whiny but surprisingly soft Crowley makes for the most compelling relationship, romantic or not. As for the casting, Good Omens pulls in all the stops. Good Omens is packed with wonderfully quotable moments, but these are our absolute favorites.
