In The Big Empty, after the Seraph Castiel is awakened by Jack's telepathic call, the Shadow is awakened. I’ve heard that too, but it makes me wonder if there are like, five different Castiel’s chilling in the Empty, and if that’s the case, why did only the one wake up when Jack called out to him? Perhaps God does have some power in the Empty, even if it's limited. It's also frustrating when people act like God is incapable of just...making Castiel and having him keep every damn memory he's had till his last death.

The empty was only brought up in the last season. Before the Universe and even God and the Darkness, there was only the Empty, an infinite black void.
