Bruce Lee My Brother was an excellent history of young Bruce before he came to the United States and it would be great if there was a sequel. Keep an open mind and enjoy this beautifully crafted film. Yes I would just don’t go into the martial art film (phim triet quyen dao) thinking its going to be an action bonanza. Its not to say that we want to see an evolution from his street fighting days into the powerhouse he was to become but as to the entertainment value you feel a tad let down. If you want wall to wall action and copious questionable embellishments in your Bruce Lee biopic, Rob Cohen’s ‘Dragon’ will be a better bet. In Bruce Lee My Brother (Ly Tieu Long: Thoi Nien Thieu) , we first see Bruce Lee being born in San Francisco 1940 while his father Opera star Lee Hoi-chuen (Tony Leung ) and his wife Grace Ho (Christy Chung) were on tour with his troupe. Ace period detail and a commanding performance by Big Tony (Leung Ka-Fai) as Bruce’s dad serve the film well, and newcomer Aarif Lee is fine in the title role. I also think Aarif lee (Ly Tri Dinh) does a fine job in his portrayal of The Dragon.

And even though he’s not a trained Martial Arts he does have that physical look. Here, co-directing with Producer Manfred Wong from a treatment by Lee’s real life brother, Robert, Yip finds his first solid project, and handles most of the 2 hour running time with keen drama and a fair visual wit. So meaningful to have a glimpse of Bruce Lee's upbringing and early adulthood, without making it into just a fighting movie.

It revolves around Bruce Lee’s life as a rebellious adolescent in Hong Kong until he sets off for the USA and conquers the world at the age of 18 with only US$100 in his pocket. But for anyone who’d enjoy a touching, intimate and visually gorgeous drama about a young man who would one day give a nation, and fans around the world, a hero, I think ‘Bruce Lee, My Brother’ is a good place to start. You won’t see a punch thrown till around the 90 minute mark, and that ends with Bruce flat on his arse, ego damaged, eager to take his friends advice that a guy called Ip Man may offer some help. The approach of realism is, for me, the correct one. Entertainment wise here lies the problem, seeing a teenage Bruce lee get  into a few scuffles. Probably not. Those jonesing for action may feel the pace sag, but ‘Bruce Lee, My Brother’ is a brilliant period family drama. The film opens in San Francisco, with Grace Lee (a better than you’d expect Christy Chung) being rushed into labour. ‘Bruce Lee, My Brother’ is a solid drama, but that may just put some audiences off.
