For much of the morning the trail was fairly flat. We enjoyed this trail!
Fun for a short or long hike. About 10 miles, a decent amount of elevation change and no water sources for about 7 miles after leaving Dicks Creek. It completely obscured the trail for hikers coming from Russell Bridge toward Warwoman Dell. This past weekend, my brother and I hiked from Dicks Creek Falls to Warwoman Dell. It's only 9.4 miles to Warwoman Dell. Every day in GA and NC involved multiple large trees across the trail and blow downs. This hike starts at Warwoman Dell... this is the same trailhead that is used for the classic AOC event - Pinnacle Knob. I had been told by my friend, Tickbait, that there were lots of pigmy rattlers in this part of the country.
Clean water/creek by the old farm. The spur trail to Big Rock is very easy to miss without the map open and tracking. FYI. We did an over-nighter and camped in a clearing near the old farm remnants. The section of the Bartram Trail near Warwoman Dell, while seldom traveled, has numerous rewarding features, and I am actually surprised that I saw only one couple of hikers this day. 5/10/2011 Appalachian Trail - Bartram Trail - Wayah Bald - NC. Janet and I thru hiked the Bartram Trail. I finally discovered the Bartram Trail at the end of the parking area, by the SECOND pavilion. Highlights on this trail include the fire tower on top of Rabun Bald, Becky Branch Falls and Martin Creek Falls.
I went a stretch of more than seven miles without finding any springs or streams where I could successfully filter water. Be prepared to climb and descent more than a dozen mountains, many of which are close to 3,000 feet or more. A pigmy rattlesnake lay coiled on the edge of the trail just a few feet from us! Could have done it with just poles, but the rope was a help. The Bartram trail runs for 35 miles in Georgia and follows the approximate route of 18th century naturalist William Bartram's southern journey. But not many camp sites and water is harder to find. Plenty of fishing spots and access to the water.
Wish we had just taken the up and back route.
We started hiking at daylight, winding our way along the Chattooga River. There's a couple parking areas in Warwoman Dell; one near the beginning of the short gravel road and one at the picnic area. Please arrive at the Clayton Ingles before 8:30.
Just before I got to the campsite, I was stepping over a series of small blowdowns when I slipped. I have hiked this trail twice. The trail starts on the south side of Hwy 28, across from the parking area. Waterfalls,great views, and lightly trafficked would definitely recommend doing this trail.

The … For the first 4.5 miles we will be headed up and up to the top of an unnamed mountain, after the climb we are rewarded with a 4.5 mile (mostly) descent to Dicks Creek. We did not have any problem finding the turn off to big rock due to the pictures in the app and tracking as well. We will be meeting at the Ingles in Clayton for a bio-break. From Warwoman Dell (1920 feet), it was a short climb over Rainy Mountain (2560 feet) and pleasant ridgewalking on old roads, before dropping to the Chattooga River Trail at Sandy Ford. 8/31/2010 Hale Ridge Rd. The adventure begins near the picnic pavilions at Warwoman Dell just east of Clayton (view maps and driving directions).The hike follows the yellow-blazed Bartram Trail northwest from the trailhead, following the cascading Becky Branch creek upstream. First night on Rabun Bald is fantastic - a backpacker's gem up there. Recent D6 experience is required to join the fun. Despite the chilly weather this morning, I warmed up quickly with my pack on.
On its path from the Georgia state line to Cheoah Bald it goes to the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains and crosses the Fishhawk Mountains before descending to the Little Tennessee River Valley.
Glad to see a bit of wildlife out too. I'm an avid backpacker and was only able to muster 15 mile days or so, including a few short side trips down spur trails to see extra sights. It's a narrow path near the outhouse, higher than the RR bed, and it takes a steep incline to the left. A great day! On Sunday 10/7/18, We drove up the Forest Service road to less than a mile to the trail and camped on Cheoah Bald in NC. We will hike the Bartram Trail from Warwoman Dell to Pinnacle Knob.
As we were finishing our meal, Jody noticed a snake along the trail close to where we had been sitting. My leg slammed against a large stump, bruising and scraping it. Bartram Trail is a 54.9 kilometer lightly trafficked point-to-point trail located near Clayton, Georgia that features a waterfall and is rated as difficult. Thank goodness there’s a rope to help with your decent. The trail joins the Appalachian Trail briefly from Wayah Bald to Winespring Bald, then descends to Nantahala Lake. Nice hike, plenty of camping spots and water. Did about 6 miles between Laurel Branch and Sandy Ford Road along the Chattooga. Other reviews are on point. Martin Creek Falls is just 1.5 miles further, it’s a good one too! Timber rattlesnake that was beside us as we ate lunch, For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps. Still a great trail!! I recommend this trail! Took about 4 hours (with stops) from Hale to Saltrock Gap and 3 hours the reverse the next day. The trail is primarily used for hiking.
Lots of great campsites along the trail, a few near the summit of Rabun Bald. Warwoman Dell via Bartram Trail . A fabulous trail. Plan to scramble to the final destination of Big Rock. We hiked with our dog and we were careful on the Big Rock. Photos; Directions.
